Dr Michael Makanga named new Executive Director of the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking

In a significant development in the global health research sector, Dr. Michael Makanga has been appointed as the Executive Director of the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking. He is set to assume his new role on November 16, 2023.

Dr. Makanga brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having held the position of Executive Director at the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Association. His extensive background includes almost three decades of clinical research work in both African and European institutions.

 

Dr. Makanga's qualifications include a medical degree from Makerere University, as well as a Master's and PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics from the Liverpool University and School of Tropical Medicine. He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

 

His expertise spans various facets of global health, including research capacity development, engagement with policymakers, and collaboration with ethics and regulatory authorities in both Africa and Europe. Furthermore, Dr. Makanga has served on numerous scientific and policy advisory boards involved in the development of medical products and technologies for infectious diseases. His contributions have extended to institutions such as the World Bank, international product development organizations, philanthropic foundations, and pharmaceutical companies.
